My summer of conventions.

Here is what I did during the summer.

San Diego Comic-Con
Had fun. I did not get to all the panel I had wanted to, but I did get a few autographs I wanted. One being was the full cast autograph of the Mythbusters and one I did not plan on was with two of the Farscape cast signed a Farscape comic book cover.
Got the chance to walk the floor of the convention more than the past and found some good swag and other items I did not know I wanted till I found them as seen here.

Here are the videos I shot at SDCC.

Here are a few panel I went to that were found online:

Comic Con 2010: Joss Whedon Experience Panel (When Nathen Fillion shows up)
Comic Con 2010: Bones (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5)

A panel I wanted to goto, but could not get in to or end up skipping:

The times of Then, Here and There.

Its a busy year for conventions. Looking at 7 major/large conventions this year. The largest number for for me (so far).

Emerald City ComiCon
- I only went one day this year and with some great panels, I did not get all the time I would have like to look around. I will be doing the full three days next year.

Sakura-Con
- Three days of fun. I even got my tickets for next year.

PaizoCon
- Great SWAG bag. I did not get in on any of the games. Did sit in on a few of the seminars. Saturday was Free RPG Day and had a good game of D&D with a preview of the new Dark Sun setting. I will try it again next year and register early to get into a game or two.

Comic-Con International
- This is 3 days away with w00tstock the night of the first full day of the convention. The schedule has been reviewed and some plans have been put together (in my head) that I hope come to pass. Now I just need to finish packing.

Gen Con Indy
- This will be my first GenCon. Going with two friends for a first time all around. I have done my research on what to expect, but time will tell on how much fun will be had.

Dragonflight
- A local RPG convention with people I have played with in the past. The games they have listed look great, with the full weekend of playing games.

PAX
- I have my full weekend ticket already purchased (this year), with the passes now sold out. Looking forward to the geek bands and such for the conventions. With some good swag from what I picked up from PAX past.

This is one last trip planed this year. It would be to see my brother and his family over on the east coast some time mid-September around my birthday.

It has and will be a busy time. Fun times.

The August Post

With posting on twitter, I have not posted as I once posted. For the blog I going to recap the basics of last month.

With Dragonflight, I had some great fun. Played a hand full of RPG games, some with Norm and others that played with at past conventions.
Got some nice freebies, picked up a few good deals on some RPG books and filled out on some D&D minis.

Check out the pictures I took at Dragonflight here.

With Comic-Con 2009 over for this year, I am still working on going thur the all the pictures I took. I have uploaded all the pictures from the main floor, the stars that had a booth or were in the autograph area and one of panels I went to. I still have a good number panels shots to review and upload. I should have those up soon.
Check out the Comic-Con Set link here for what I have uploaded so far and check back later for the other picture once I upload them.

What I did at Dragonflight.

Dragonflight was from Aug 8th thru the 10th.

I took Friday off and slept in. I headed over to where the convention was being held, which was about a 10 min drive, around 2:00 pm. I spotted Bob (a friend) in the board game room playing a game. Norm (another friend) showed up after a while and we went over to Kohana, a Mongoliam Grill, for a late lunch early dinner. With food in our bellies we head back to the con and waited for for our 7:00 pm game to start. The game was called "Just a Mater of Time", used the Spirit of the Century system and was GMed by the Blue Dragons. This was part 1 of a 2 part game. We had about 15 people, which we split into 3 group with 3 different GMs. The game started with a flash forward (in game time) for the intro and and then we woke up needing to stop the bad thing that happened in our dream (that would happen if we did not stop it). We got to a point and called it a night to be continued the next day in part 2.

Saturday, the game I have signed up for started at 9:00 am and was called "Saturday of the Dead", used the Savage World system and was GMed by Steve Winter. We started by making some quick characters on some note cards. The game set up with building models and such as seen here. The game was a survival game. We were to get supplies and not get killed by zombies. I liked the set up, but we had too many zombies start showing up with all the gun fire, which two other players were a little too gun happy. We got some item and had to end the game with a quick get away. The game after that was part 2 of the "Just a Mater of Time" where out group and the other two were able to stop the Cthulhu type monster. The last game for the night was called "Who you gonna call?" used the Palladium system and was GMed by Richard Johnson. The game used the Ghostbusters history after the two movies. I had thought it was going to use the Ghostbusters system that was out there. Still the game was fun and was finished the game with a big battle were we kicked some, but I degress.

Sunday, I only planed on one game and it started at 9:00 am. It was called "Aces Harrington and the Hijacked Airship", it used the Spirit of the Century system and was GMed by Eric Aldrich. Like the name, we had to defend the Airship we were traveling on, which we did and lived to see another day. After the game, I meet up with Bob, were we went out for pizza and talked about the "Just a Mater of Time" game we were both in (but at different games).

See the pictures I took of Dragonflight 2008.

Dragonflight 2007

Dragonflight is here and below are the games I played, with some info on what happened.

Danger in the Hollow Earth! Part 1
Fri 7:00PM to 11:30PM (4.5 hrs)
Presented by Eric Aldrich
Hollow Earth Expedition published by Exile Game Studio

Description: This year the Blue Dragons do the pulps! Join us for an action packed 2 sessions of role playing. It’s 1936 and your team needs to beat the opposition to a key artifact in the Hollow Earth. This years Game Masters are Eric Aldrich, Jason Alexander, Mike Brislawn, Tim Brown, Garry Corbin, and Bob Zenger. We are cutting back slightly in the number of players we are running in the hopes of working in more individual “crunchy bits”.

This was my first game of the Dragonflight convention. Bob also signed up for this game and ended up in the same group. We started with some background and picking some characters. This part of the game was a sample game to get a feel for the system. One note on the system, it does use 3 different set of special d8 dice that use a bell curve for dice (d1, d2 and d3). The sample game ended with the group be Rapter food. Next we switched tables and picked more permanent character and customised the characters a little. The proceeded at a good pace and went a little late, but we got to the stopping point for the night.

Atlantis Under the Seas
Sat 9:00AM to 1:30PM(4.5 hrs)
Presented by Sophie Lagace
Seven Leagues published by Malcontent Games

Description: Deep under the waves, the lost Kingdom of Atlantis lives on. But the shadow of Leviathan, Emperor of the Abyss, is stretching over all the undersea kingdoms and his dark minions are at Atlantis' fabled walls. Will you be the ones to save the Kingdom? Play a knight of Atlantis, mermaid, siren, triton or nereid, or any suitable fairytale character of your choice is this very streamlined, story-oriented system.

This system is a story driven game and does use a d12 dice for some out comes in the story. I ended up picking out a cute fish type character and found out out mission for the game was to fine the Queen and find out a way to defeat the main villain. We started out with just 2 players and 3 other people showed up a little later, for good game with the right number of players. The game ended with us saving the Queen and defeating the villain. Also nice was that they had prizes of the game system. I got the print version and a PDF version of the game book.

Danger in the Hollow Earth! Part 2
Sat 2:00PM to 6:30PM(4.5 hrs)
Presented by Eric Aldrich
Hollow Earth Expedition published by Exile Game Studio

Description: (see above) Continued from the game the night before.

We started with out with our group of 5 players at a new table and GM from the game last night. Our group continued on our quest meet a bigwig, that might have killed us, if we did not make a deal to get ride of a ironclad that was being a problem to him. To get rid of the ironclad, we got rid of the crew and then used it to get a submarine. The submarine was near were we need to be for our group objective. As we found out later, it was was the objective area of the other groups. There was a large battle going on. To not wanting to be left out, mine and Bob's character (plus some NPCs) used the cannons from the ironclad to blow some things up. Battle ended, we won (our groups did). Our leaders talked and came to a agreement. At the game end we got to keep the dice give out durring the game and got a limited edition "5 Style Point" poker chip.

Stargate: Mictlan
Sat 7:00PM to 11:30PM(4.5 hrs)
Presented by Tim Brown
Savage Worlds published by Great White Games

Description: Our heroes are still unable to return to Earth, but they are making progress against the goa'uld/wraith in the isolated Mictlan systems. But now the Aztec gods are angry, and the hunt is on!

This was continuing game and picked up from the ConQuest game played 02/18/07. We had a full table with 6 players and 2 alternates for a total of 8 player. The 2 alternates copied two of the character sheets for a full table. I picked my character on the name and ended being the leader for our group. I do some time stray from the main or lead character in a large group game. It did not turn out too bad at all. Most of the time I made suggestions and lead our group. A lower rank goa'uld made a offer to strike a meeting of other goa'ulds. We came up with a few suggestions, one was that use a large cats (a puma) as a gift for the meeting. A joke, I think I came up with, was to rig the pumas to explode. Exploding pumas was running a through out the game. We did not use the rig the pumas, we did rig the two cases. First to open and have the cats get out. Next to trigger the smoke bombs to cause confusion. At that point, guns are grabbed and reinforcements come through the gate and attack the enemy. After the battle we got a notice to meet with the main bad goa'ulds. We made a deal with devil in order to get our SG team home.

Kill Puppies for Satan!!!
Sat Midnight to 2:00AM (2.0 hrs)
Presented by Peter Darley
Kill Puppies for Satan published by Lumpley Games

Description: Let out your foul-mouthed inner cretin and explore how much fun it is to collect minuscule cosmic power by wanton slaughter of big eyed puppies / bunnies / kittens / dolphins / whatever for your dark master!

The presenter was a player in the Atlantis Under the Seas game. I had heard a few thing about the system. This game is a adult themed game with the language and the animal killing. I took it a chance to play different type game. The game started at midnight and there were 4 players. We created our character in a few steps and did a round take to get some history of our character and to get a common character that we were going to a party to. It ended up be a rescue party. Sorry to say that some cats and other animals were harmed durring the the game. A odd game that needed to played late at night with not much sleep.

That it for me, I took Sunday off to get some rest do some other things.

See some pictures here.

My first game convention.

My first game convention was at Dragonflight this last weekend from Friday till Sunday.

Friday started out slow with me going to work. But after work is what I was looking foward to.

Torgoth's Tower 1 (Hero System)
The game started at 7pm with some handouts and blank characters. I was not sure how this was going to work. We were walked thru the creation process, which was easy.

With the Big Book Of All Shtickiness (a reference for character advancement) we picked out our character's race. The standard stuff was a available, but monster races were also available to pick (but only one of the monster type could be used). I wanted to try a monster, quickly chose a Ogre (high strength, but hard to hit with). At this time the game was started in a armor/weapon room with no memory of who they were. There were 3 to 4 tables going on at one time with different GMs, running the group in different locations in the tower. If a player left the area or died he/she would pick up and head over to the other table. As the night went on our character got some of their memory back and progressed in level (which we got to choose Big Book). My Ogre chose to become a Specialist (a Fighter) to get a better to hit roll. With the next advancement I chose Powerhouse (a Wild Fighter) to get the Massive Bludgeon power (does knockback damage to my attack). Durring this time we had two main missions that we were able to win at. The night ended on our group stuck on a puzzle waiting for part 2 the next day.

Next came sleep. A full day at work and and over 4 hours of gaming I knew I would not last a midnight game. There games that sounded good, a GURPS (would like to try it sometime) and Call of Cthulhu (not a game you want to nod off in). Next time I will take that Friday off and rest, so I will be ready for a midnight game.

Next came Saturday, a full day of games.

ReVolver (modified Hero System)
The first game of the day. One part acting (with basic info on the character, making it up as you go) and one part roll playing with stated characters. Good story, my first time playing in a game that used music in it. It sounded good. The game ended basicly on time and with the missing completed. Prizes were randomly given out, I got a Dusty Green/Copper set of 7 dice with the d10 missing. Free stuff is good, I have other d10s I can use.

Torgoth's Tower 2 (Hero System)
The game continued from last night. My Orge advanced two more time, next came Blademaster. My weapon of choice was a Great Club. I got the ok use club instead of a blade, basically renaming it Weaponmaster. The two powers my Orge gained was Sharpen Weapon (adding Armor-Piercing to my club), the second power was Rapid Attack (like the name says, get to attact up to 3 time, depending on the roll). The last upgrade was to Lieutenant (which I used to increase a few stats). The final battle (for our group) came around with a bunch of undead and creatures atacking. We had a plan to get this gold throne cover from a dragon and bash it into pulp. It did look like we were going to attack it, but one of the other players talked to it and made a trade. With a few good hits the item was dead and the main bad guy had a new problem. The main bad guy had his own problem fighting the other 2/3 of the other player and loosing. Time was not on our side, we had gone past the game cut off. We meet almost all of the game goals, Torgoth (the bad guy) would have been take down by on of the player, but fast foward to the end due to time.

Save the porn queens! (Pax Draconis System)
The game was basically a rescue mission. The GM overlooked bringing PreGens so we got make the character. It was easy, but went a little slow with one book and did take away from game time. This is a scifi system and looks to have some good background and history with it. The battle system is different from others I have played it. The battle was towards the end of the game and was a little rushed due to the time for the session comming to a close. The game was fun, for something I have not played. We did rescue the porn stars and got off the planet.

There were a few other games going on at the same time I would liked to play in, but I wanted to try something new.

Hot Springs of Horrors (BESM "Slayers")
I have seen the game books before and was used for anime style game. I thought I would try this out. I know of the Slayers series and seen maybe one episode awhile back. There was a total of three players and the GM. There was a 15 min discussion of the Slayers series (which jumped to different eps and sequels), where I just grinned and nodded. They geeked out. The two other player played the two main lead character and when the game started, they attacked each other (which might be something the character might do). I felt like getting up and head home for the night, but I held up and played on. The second half of the game was a little better and we got to the end of the game about 3am (Sunday). If I play this game again I will play a anime series I know better.

I went home for a few hours of sleep for the 9am game of 7th Sea.

Escape! (7th Sea, d6 ver)
Good turn out on this game, we had 5 player. Everyone had played the game before, except Bob (friend form my Hero game group). PreGens were picked and the game was reviewed. We started on a ship fleeing from a larger ship. We lost them and headed into port. It had been awhile sence I had played the game, it was fun (like seeing a old friend). Some prizes were given out, Bob got voted for best player for the game and picked up a set of dice. The other two item were diced off, I got a Hulk Jiggle Head Pen.

That it for the games I played in. I picked up a Dragonflight Con shirt and preregistered for next years con for $25.00 and also preregistered for ConQuest North West that will be in the same hotel in February 16th thru 19th (Presidents Day Weekend) for $26.00.

On a side note, a few flyers from Dragon's Landing Inn Podcast were left around in a few places at the convention and the "My Other Shirt is Elven Chain +5" shirt from DLI was worn all day Saturday.

Check out my camera phone pictures from Dragonflight 2006.
